When fibers are oriented parallel to the primary load path, they directly oppose the force, preventing the matrix from failing prematurely. In contrast, chopped fiber mixtures consist of short, randomly oriented strands. Because these fibers are discontinuous, they cannot support loads as efficiently; stress must be transferred back and forth between short fiber segments through the matrix. This process relies heavily on the shear strength of the matrix rather than the high tensile strength of the fiber itself.
