These voids act as weak points that can lead to structural failure under stress. HIP addresses this by placing the component inside a pressure vessel and subjecting it to high-temperature heat and high-pressure inert gas, typically argon, simultaneously. The temperature is high enough to make the metal slightly soft or plastic, while the uniform, all-around pressure forces the internal surfaces of the voids to collapse and bond together through a process called diffusion bonding. Diffusion bonding is the migration of atoms across the interface of the void, which effectively heals the gap and makes the internal structure solid. This process significantly improves the mechanical properties of the part, particularly its fatigue life, which is the ability to withstand repeated loading cycles without cracking.
