When deployed, they extend forward and downward, creating a gap between the slat and the main wing leading edge. This physical alteration changes the wing geometry in two primary ways to decrease stall speed. First, the slats effectively increase the wing&#x27;s camber, which is the curvature of the airfoil from the leading edge to the trailing edge. By extending forward, they increase the total chord line and the overall curvature, which allows the wing to generate higher lift at lower airspeeds. Second, the slat creates a slot that allows high-pressure air from beneath the wing to flow through to the upper surface. This airflow energizes the boundary layer, which is the thin layer of air immediately touching the wing surface that tends to slow down due to friction. By injecting this high-energy air into the boundary layer, the slats delay flow separation, which is the point where air detaches from the wing surface and causes a stall. Because the air stays attached at higher angles of attack, the wing can fly safely at a much slower speed during landing without losing lift.
