Larger aircraft are generally more fuel-efficient per seat because they carry a higher payload with a proportionally smaller increase in aerodynamic drag compared to a smaller aircraft. On longer flights, the fuel burn required to carry the additional weight of a larger airframe is offset by the efficiency gained from moving many more passengers simultaneously over the same distance. Consequently, the combination of spreading high fixed costs over more seats and optimizing fuel efficiency for long-distance cruising results in a lower cost per seat mile for larger aircraft compared to smaller ones.
