The bypass ratio is the mathematical comparison between the mass of air moving through the bypass path and the mass of air moving through the core. In a high bypass ratio engine, the vast majority of the air bypasses the combustion chamber entirely. This improves propulsive efficiency because it accelerates a very large volume of air to a relatively low speed rather than accelerating a small volume of air to an extremely high speed. According to the physics of motion, moving a large mass at a lower velocity is more efficient for producing thrust than moving a small mass at a high velocity. Regarding sound emissions, engine noise is primarily generated by the shearing action that occurs when high-speed exhaust air meets the slower, stationary ambient air. Because a high bypass engine moves a large volume of air at a lower exhaust velocity, the difference in speed between the engine exhaust and the surrounding atmosphere is significantly reduced. This lower speed differential minimizes the turbulence and friction at the exhaust exit, which results in a substantial decrease in the noise generated during takeoff and landing.
