Most water-soluble substances circulate primarily in the blood, where they are easily filtered by the kidneys and excreted in urine. Because THC dissolves readily in lipids, it rapidly leaves the bloodstream to sequester, or store itself, in body fat deposits throughout the body. Think of water-soluble substances like food coloring in a glass of water that is quickly flushed down a drain, whereas THC acts like oil that coats the sides of the glass, lingering long after the water is gone. This fat storage acts as a reservoir; as the THC levels in the blood drop, the stored THC slowly leaches back into the bloodstream to be metabolized by the liver. This constant, slow release from adipose tissue creates a prolonged terminal half-life, which is the time required for half of the substance to be eliminated from the body, leading to a much slower systemic clearance compared to drugs that remain in the blood.
