Attention residue refers to the lingering cognitive presence of a previous task that persists even after switching to a new task. In multitasking environments, where individuals frequently switch between different activities, attention residue can significantly impair performance. When switching tasks, a portion of an individual's attention remains focused on the previous task, making it difficult to fully engage with the new task. This lingering attention can slow down processing speed, increase errors, and reduce overall efficiency. For example, if someone switches from writing a report to answering emails, they may still be thinking about the report while trying to compose emails, leading to slower response times and a higher likelihood of mistakes. The more complex and demanding the previous task, the greater the attention residue and the more significant the performance impairment. Minimizing task switching and allowing sufficient time to transition between tasks can help reduce the negative effects of attention residue.
