This allows the load balancer to inspect the contents of the application data, including headers, cookies, URL paths, and query strings. An example of this is routing traffic based on a URL path, where a request for example.com/images is sent to a dedicated image server while a request for example.com/api is sent to an application server. Because Layer 7 load balancers can read the HTTP request path, they can make this specific routing decision, whereas a Layer 4 load balancer is physically unable to see the URL path and therefore cannot perform this task.
