Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are vital devices designed to deliver an electric shock to the heart in cases of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). When used promptly and correctly, AEDs significantly increase the chances of restoring a normal heart rhythm and saving a person's life. Understanding the use of AEDs in a cardiac emergency involves knowledge of their functionality, proper application, and the critical role they play in the Chain of Survival.

Functionality of AEDs:

1. Automated Analysis:
- AEDs are equipped with automated analysis capabilities to assess the heart rhythm of the individual in distress.
- The device analyzes the electrical activity of the heart and determines whether a shock is required.

2. Voice Prompts:
- AEDs provide clear and concise voice prompts to guide the rescuer through the entire process.
- Instructions typically include placing electrode pads on the person's chest, avoiding contact during analysis, and administering shocks when necessary.

3. Shock Delivery:
- If the AED detects a shockable rhythm, it prompts the rescuer to clear the area and delivers an electric shock to the heart.
- The shock is intended to interrupt chaotic electrical activity and allow the heart to reestablish a normal rhythm.

Proper Application of AEDs:

1. Ensure Safety:
- Confirm the safety of the rescuer, the victim, and bystanders before using the AED.

2. Activate Emergency Services:
- Call emergency services immediately to request professional medical assistance.

3. Apply Electrode Pads:
- Place the electrode pads on the bare chest of the person in distress according to the AED instructions.
- Follow the visual or voice prompts carefully to ensure proper pad placement.

4. Allow Automated Analysis:
- Allow the AED to analyze the heart rhythm. During this process, avoid touching the person to ensure accurate readings.

5. Follow Voice Prompts:
- If the AED advises a shock, make sure everyone is clear of the victim and press the shock button as instructed.
- Resume CPR immediately following the shock.

6. Continue CPR and AED Use:
- If no shock is advised, continue CPR until emergency medical services arrive or the person shows signs of life.

Critical Role in the Chain of Survival:

AEDs play a pivotal role in the Chain of Survival, which consists of early recognition, early CPR, early defibrillation, and advanced life support. Early defibrillation with an AED is crucial because it addresses the time-sensitive nature of cardiac emergencies. For every minute that passes without defibrillation, the chances of survival decrease by about 10%. AEDs, when strategically placed in public spaces, workplaces, and communities, contribute to a more rapid response to cardiac arrest, ultimately improving outcomes and increasing the likelihood of survival.
