A hydraulic accumulator is a pressure storage reservoir in a hydraulic system. Its purpose is multi-faceted, contributing significantly to the system's overall performance. First, it stores hydraulic energy. The accumulator stores pressurized hydraulic fluid, which can be released quickly to provide a boost of power when needed. This is especially useful in applications that require intermittent bursts of high force or speed. Second, it dampens pressure surges. Accumulators absorb pressure spikes caused by sudden changes in load or valve switching. This protects hydraulic components from damage and reduces noise. Third, it supplements pump flow. During peak demand, the accumulator can supply additional hydraulic fluid to supplement the pump's output, ensuring that actuators (cylinders and motors) receive adequate flow and pressure. This allows for the use of a smaller pump, reducing energy consumption. Fourth, it provides emergency power. In the event of a pump failure, the accumulator can provide a limited amount of hydraulic power to allow the system to be safely shut down or to complete a critical task. Accumulators typically use compressed gas, such as nitrogen, to store the hydraulic energy. The gas is separated from the hydraulic fluid by a bladder, piston, or diaphragm. As hydraulic fluid enters the accumulator, it compresses the gas, storing the energy. When the system needs a boost of power, the pressurized gas pushes the fluid back into the system. For example, in a hydraulic excavator, an accumulator can be used to provide a boost of power to the boom cylinder when lifting a heavy load or to dampen pressure surges caused by sudden stops. Therefore, the hydraulic accumulator improves the responsiveness, efficiency, and reliability of the hydraulic system.
