Performing a standard disk image involves copying the contents of a physical hard drive, which only captures data stored permanently on non-volatile storage. If you shut down a server or restart it to perform a disk image, you destroy the volatile memory and lose the ephemeral data stored within it. Because modern cyberattacks often reside entirely in RAM to remain invisible to traditional antivirus software, capturing volatile memory first is required to preserve this transient evidence before the power-down or reboot process overwrites or erases it.
