When a device, such as a server or storage array, performs a Fabric Login, known as FLOGI, it establishes its physical connection to the switch and receives a Fibre Channel ID, which is a unique 24-bit address used for routing frames. Immediately following FLOGI, the device performs a process called Port Login, or PLOGI, to the Name Server. During this interaction, the device registers its own attributes, including its World Wide Name, which is a permanent hardware identifier similar to a MAC address, its port type, and the services it supports. The Name Server stores this information in a database. Once registered, the device queries the Name Server to obtain the addresses and capabilities of other devices in the fabric. This process, known as a Registered State Change Notification or GID_FT query, allows the device to discover and communicate with target storage devices without needing manual configuration. Essentially, the Name Server automates the discovery process, ensuring that every device knows exactly where its communication partners are located within the fabric network.
