What is the use of force and how does it relate to defensive tactics?

The use of force is the intentional application of physical power or control to protect oneself, protect others, prevent harm, or stop a threat. It is a legal concept that defines when and how much force can be used based on the situation. Use of force is not just about physical action—it includes verbal commands, physical restraint, use of control devices (like handcuffs or batons), and, in extreme cases, deadly force. The amount of force must always be necessary, reasonable, and proportional to the level of threat. This is guided by what’s known as the “use-of-force continuum,” which outlines escalating levels of response based on how dangerous or resistant the subject is. Using too much or too little force can lead to failure to control the situation or serious legal consequences.

Defensive tactics are the trained, specific physical techniques used within the framework of the use of force. They include blocks, strikes, pressure-point controls, joint locks, takedowns, and weapon retention methods. These tactics are designed to control a subject safely and effectively without causing unnecessary injury. Unlike random or instinctive reactions, defensive tactics are deliberate, practiced methods that allow someone to respond with skill and control in high-pressure situations. They are also legally defensible because they follow established training standards and policy.

Defensive tactics support the lawful use of force by providing options that match different levels of resistance or aggression. For example, if a subject is passively resisting, a soft control tactic like a joint lock may be enough. If the subject becomes aggressive or dangerous, more assertive tactics like strikes or takedowns may be needed, but still must be controlled and justifiable. Proper use of defensive tactics helps avoid unnecessary harm, reduces the chance of escalation, and protects both the responder and the subject. In this way, defensive tactics are a key tool for applying force responsibly, within the law, and with minimal risk to everyone involved.
