How can risks be assessed in defensive situations and tactics adapted accordingly?

Risks in defensive situations can be assessed by quickly observing key factors: the threat level, the environment, the number of opponents, and the presence of weapons or escape routes. This process is called threat assessment. It involves staying alert and using situational awareness to judge how dangerous the situation is and what actions are most appropriate.

Once the risks are identified, tactics can be adapted to match the conditions. For example, if the opponent is armed, the priority becomes creating distance, controlling the weapon, or using cover. If there are multiple attackers, tactics may focus on movement, using barriers, or disengaging. In tight spaces, large or forceful techniques may be replaced with close-quarter controls. If the environment is unstable—like poor lighting or slippery ground—balance and footing become critical, and simpler, safer techniques are used.

Adaptation requires flexibility and experience. Defensive tactics are not one-size-fits-all; they must change based on what’s safest and most effective in the moment. This means constantly reassessing the situation, adjusting force levels, and choosing actions that protect both safety and control.
