Conversely, a low battery alert does not imply a loss of control. When the battery is low, the operator remains fully connected to the vehicle and maintains the ability to pilot it. Relying on the operator to manage a low battery situation is safer because the human pilot can assess the current environment, such as wind speed or nearby obstacles, and choose the most appropriate landing site. Triggering RTH automatically for every low battery alert would be counterproductive, as it might force the vehicle into a pre-programmed path that ignores immediate real-world dangers that a human pilot could otherwise easily avoid. Therefore, RTH is the forced default when communication is severed, while manual intervention is preferred when communication remains active.
