What is the role of power dynamics in hindering the process of empathy?

Power dynamics can significantly hinder the process of empathy by creating a hierarchical distance that makes it difficult for individuals in positions of power to understand and relate to the experiences of those with less power. Individuals with power may be less motivated to empathize with those below them, as they may perceive those individuals as less important or relevant to their own goals. Furthermore, power can create a sense of detachment and entitlement, making it difficult for those in positions of authority to accurately perceive the needs and concerns of others. For example, a CEO might struggle to empathize with the challenges faced by entry-level employees if they are primarily focused on high-level strategic decisions and lack direct interaction with those employees. Conversely, individuals with less power may be hesitant to express their true feelings or needs to those in positions of authority, fearing negative consequences or retaliation, which further inhibits the empathic process. This imbalance in power can create a significant barrier to genuine understanding and connection.
