Without this layer, the highly reactive electrolyte would continue to come into contact with the electrode, leading to an endless chemical reaction that consumes the electrolyte, degrades the battery materials, and prevents the battery from functioning. The SEI effectively passivates the electrode surface, stabilizing the battery chemistry and ensuring that only the desired lithium ions travel back and forth during future charge and discharge cycles.
