What specific pilot certification is generally required to operate in Class B airspace?
To operate in Class B airspace, a pilot must generally hold at least a private pilot certificate, or a student pilot certificate with the appropriate endorsements, and receive specific training and endorsements related to operating in Class B airspace. According to 14 CFR 91.131, unless otherwise authorized by ATC, no person may operate an aircraft within Class B airspace unless they hold at least a private pilot certificate; or, they hold a student pilot certificate and have received the required training and endorsement from an authorized instructor; or, the aircraft is operated by a military pilot. Furthermore, the aircraft must have an operating two-way radio capable of communicating with air traffic control (ATC), and the pilot must establish two-way communication with ATC prior to entering Class B airspace and continue to do so while within that airspace. The pilot must also receive a specific clearance to enter the airspace from ATC.
