Driver fatigue and distraction significantly impair high-speed driving performance and safety, leading to a drastically increased risk of accidents. Fatigue, a state of physical and mental exhaustion, severely impacts reaction time, vigilance, and decision-making abilities. At high speeds, even a slight delay in reaction time can have catastrophic consequences. For example, a fatigued driver might react slower to a sudden braking situation by another vehicle, leading to a rear-end collision. Furthermore, fatigue can cause microsleeps, brief periods of unconsciousness lasting only a few seconds, but long enough at high speeds to cause a vehicle to veer off course or cross into oncoming traffic. The effects are compounded by reduced situational awareness, where the driver may miss crucial visual cues like approaching vehicles or changing traffic conditions.

Distraction, on the other hand, diverts a driver's attention from the primary task of driving, similarly impairing their performance. This can range from minor distractions, such as adjusting the radio or eating, to major distractions, such as engaging in a heated phone conversation or using a mobile device. At high speeds, even a fleeting moment of inattention can result in a loss of control. For instance, looking down to read a text message for just a few seconds at 70 mph translates to driving blind for the length of a football field. The combined effect of fatigue and distraction is particularly dangerous at high speeds. A fatigued and distracted driver has a significantly reduced ability to process information, make quick decisions, and maintain control of the vehicle. This combination creates a dangerous synergy where the negative impacts are amplified. Imagine a fatigued driver reaching for a dropped object while traveling at high speed. This simultaneous act of distraction and impaired reaction time due to fatigue exponentially increases the risk of an accident. Such accidents often involve multiple vehicles and result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the high impact forces involved at high speeds.
