Explain the effect of driver fatigue and distraction on high-speed driving performance and safety.

Driver fatigue and distraction significantly impair high-speed driving performance and safety, leading to a drastically increased risk of accidents. Fatigue, a state of physical and mental exhaustion, severely impacts reaction time, vigilance, and decision-making abilities. At high speeds, even a slight delay in reaction time can have catastrophic consequences. For example, a fatigued driver might react slower to a sudden braking situation by another vehicle, leading to a rear-end collision. Furthermore, fatigue can cause microsleeps, brief periods of unconsciousness lasting only a few seconds, but long enough at high speeds to cause a vehicle to veer off course or cross into oncoming traffic. The effects are compounded by reduced situational awareness, where the driver may miss crucial visual cues like approaching vehicles or changin....
