A lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedure is crucial during maintenance activities on hydrogen production equipment to prevent the accidental release of hazardous energy and ensure the safety of maintenance personnel. LOTO is a safety procedure that involves isolating equipment from all energy sources before maintenance or repair work is performed. This includes electrical energy, mechanical energy, hydraulic energy, pneumatic energy, and thermal energy. The procedure involves physically locking out energy-isolating devices, such as circuit breakers, valves, and disconnect switches, in a safe position, and then tagging them with a warning sign indicating that the equipment is out of service and should not be operated. This prevents the accidental startup of equipment or the release of hazardous materials, such as hydrogen, during maintenance activities. Without LOTO, maintenance personnel could be exposed to serious hazards, such as electric shock, burns, crushing injuries, or exposure to toxic gases.
