About this Course

Understanding the Core Principles of Stoicism

The Dichotomy of Control

  • Learn to distinguish between what you can control (your thoughts, actions, and judgments) and what you cannot control (external events, other people's actions, and the past). Mastering this distinction is crucial for reducing anxiety and increasing inner peace.
  • Explore practical techniques for identifying controllable and uncontrollable factors in various life situations, such as work, relationships, and personal goals. This includes cognitive exercises to reframe your perspective.
  • Practice accepting what you cannot control without resistance or resentment. Understand the Stoic concept of *amor fati– loving your fate – and how it can lead to greater resilience and acceptance of life's challenges.

Virtue as the Sole Good

  • Grasp the central Stoic belief that virtue (wisdom, justice, courage, and temperance) is the only true good. Understand that external things like wealth, health, and reputation are indifferent – neither inherently good nor bad.
  • Delve into each of the four cardinal virtues: wisdom (practical knowledge and sound judgment), justice (treating others fairly and contributing to the common good), courage (acting rightly in the face of fear and adversity), and temperance (exercising moderation and self-control).
  • Learn to cultivate these virtues in your daily life through self-reflection, conscious action, and emulation of virtuous individuals. Discover how virtue leads to *eudaimonia– a state of flourishing and living in accordance with nature.

Living in Accordance with Nature

  • Explore the Stoic concept of living in accordance with nature, both human nature and the nature of the universe. Understand that human nature is rational and social, and that living virtuously means fulfilling our potential as rational and social beings.
  • Learn to align your actions with the natural order of the universe, accepting its inherent laws and limitations. This includes recognizing the interconnectedness of all things and the importance of contributing to the greater good.
  • Practice living in the present moment, focusing on what is within your control and accepting the flow of events without resistance. Understand how this mindset can lead to greater peace and contentment.

Developing Stoic Practices and Techniques

Negative Visualization (Premeditatio Malorum)

  • Master the technique of negative visualization, imagining potential setbacks and difficulties in order to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally. This practice helps to reduce anxiety and increase gratitude for what you have.
  • Learn to apply negative visualization to various aspects of your life, such as your health, relationships, and career. Practice visualizing worst-case scenarios in detail, then consider how you would cope with them.
  • Understand the purpose of negative visualization: not to dwell on negativity, but to cultivate resilience, appreciate the present moment, and avoid complacency.

Journaling and Self-Reflection

  • Learn to use journaling as a tool for self-reflection and personal growth. Develop a structured journaling practice that includes examining your thoughts, emotions, and actions each day.
  • Practice asking yourself key Stoic questions, such as: What is within my control? What virtues did I practice today? Where did I fall short? How can I improve tomorrow?
  • Use journaling to identify and challenge your limiting beliefs and irrational fears. Explore how your thoughts and emotions influence your behavior, and learn to reframe negative thoughts in a more rational and constructive way.

The View from Above (Perspective Shifting)

  • Master the technique of perspective shifting, taking a broader view of your life and the world around you. Imagine yourself from a distant perspective, such as a satellite or a historical viewpoint.
  • Learn to see your problems and challenges in a larger context, recognizing their relative insignificance in the grand scheme of things. This can help to reduce stress and increase perspective.
  • Practice applying perspective shifting to your relationships, recognizing the humanity and imperfections of others. This can lead to greater empathy and understanding.

Applying Stoicism to Modern Life

Stoicism in the Workplace

  • Learn how to apply Stoic principles to improve your performance and relationships in the workplace. Practice remaining calm and rational under pressure, focusing on what you can control, and accepting the actions of others without judgment.
  • Develop resilience in the face of setbacks and criticism. Learn to view failures as opportunities for learning and growth.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with colleagues by practicing empathy, fairness, and integrity. Be a reliable and responsible team member.

Stoicism in Relationships

  • Understand how Stoicism can improve your relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners. Practice communicating effectively and respectfully, focusing on understanding the other person's perspective.
  • Learn to manage your emotions in difficult conversations, avoiding anger, defensiveness, and resentment. Focus on finding solutions and building stronger connections.
  • Practice acceptance and forgiveness, recognizing that everyone is imperfect and makes mistakes. Let go of grudges and focus on building a more positive and supportive relationship.

Stoicism and Personal Resilience

  • Develop your personal resilience by applying Stoic principles to cope with stress, anxiety, and adversity. Practice focusing on what you can control, accepting what you cannot, and finding meaning in difficult situations.
  • Learn to cultivate gratitude and appreciation for the good things in your life, even during challenging times. Practice mindfulness and self-compassion.
  • Develop a strong sense of purpose and direction, aligning your actions with your values and goals. Live a life of virtue and meaning.
