Is an opponent likely to strike if they are trying to back up or run?

An opponent is less likely to strike effectively while actively backing up or running away, but the possibility should not be completely discounted. The primary reason for reduced striking effectiveness is the compromised balance and reduced power generation. Backing up or running disrupts the stable base needed to deliver a forceful strike. However, a desperate or skilled attacker may still attempt a strike while retreating, often relying on a quick, opportunistic attack rather than a fully committed technique. These strikes are often less powerful and less accurate, but they can still be dangerous. Therefore, while an opponent is attempting to disengage, it's important to maintain a defensive posture, anticipate potential attacks, and continue to create distance. Assuming an opponent will not strike simply because they are retreating can be a fatal mistake.
