On the left side of the diagram, the fault tree identifies the potential causes of the hazardous event, also known as threats. Each threat is linked to the hazardous event through a series of causal pathways. Preventative barriers, also known as controls, are placed on these pathways to prevent the threats from leading to the hazardous event. On the right side of the diagram, the event tree identifies the potential consequences of the hazardous event. Each consequence is linked to the hazardous event through a series of branching pathways. Mitigative barriers are placed on these pathways to reduce the severity of the consequences. The Bowtie diagram provides a clear and concise overview of the entire risk scenario, including the causes, consequences, and control measures.
