When oil or gas starts leaking without control, the very first thing to do to stop it from getting worse is to isolate the source of the leak. Isolating the source means immediately cutting off the supply of the leaking oil or gas from its point of origin. This is typically accomplished by activating emergency shut-off systems, which are automated or manually triggered mechanisms designed to rapidly close valves or other control devices to halt the flow of the hazardous material.
