Conway’s Law states that organizations design systems that mirror their own communication structures. This means the way people in a company talk to each other and share information inevitably dictates the architecture of the software they build. If an organization is divided into isolated groups that do not communicate, the resulting software will likely be fragmented and disconnected. Conversely, if teams work in a highly integrated and collaborative manner, the software architecture will tend to be more modular and cohesive. This happens because developers are limited by the information they can access and the people they can easily contact, so they create software components that align with the boundaries of those human interactions. For example, if a backend team and a frontend team rarely speak to each other, the interface between the database and the user application will often be rigid and difficult to change. To create a specific software architecture, leaders must therefore intentionally arrange their teams and communication paths to match the desired technical output.
