The lugs are the protruding teeth on the clutch dog, while the gear pockets are the matching recessed slots inside the forward or reverse gears. Under load, these components must remain fully seated to transfer torque. When the sharp, square edges of the lugs and pockets become worn or rounded due to gear shifting while under high RPM or partial engagement, they can no longer maintain a positive mechanical lock. Instead of staying seated, the angled surfaces of the rounded lugs allow the clutch dog to cam out or slide out of the gear pockets under the pressure of the propeller rotation. This creates a slippage condition where the clutch dog intermittently jumps out of gear, often resulting in a ratcheting sound and a loss of drive until the pressure is released and the components reseat.
