Without a film of oil to reduce friction between the rapidly moving metal surfaces, the parts overheat due to metal-to-metal contact. This extreme heat causes the aluminum piston to expand faster than the iron or steel cylinder, leading to a condition called piston seizure, where the piston becomes physically stuck inside the cylinder. This process causes immediate and severe scoring on the cylinder walls and piston skirts, often resulting in permanent mechanical failure of the engine.
