In a two-stroke engine, oil is mixed with fuel or injected directly into the intake to lubricate internal moving parts like the piston, cylinder walls, connecting rod bearings, and crankshaft bearings. An air bubble trapped in the oil delivery line creates an air lock, which is a pocket of air that prevents oil from flowing through the line to the engine. Because the oil supply is interrupted, these critical internal components are deprived of lubrication. Without a film of oil to reduce friction between the rapidly moving metal surfaces, the parts overheat due to metal-to-metal contact. This extreme heat causes the aluminum piston to expand faster than the iron or steel cylinder, leading to a condition called piston seizure, where the piston becomes physically stuck inside the cylinder. This process causes immediate and severe scoring on the cylinder walls and piston skirts, often resulting in permanent mechanical failure of the engine.
