When these components are manufactured or used over time, they develop specific wear patterns that match each other perfectly. If you replace only the housing, the new, flat surface of the housing will not seal correctly against the uneven, grooved surface of an old, worn-out wear plate. This mismatch creates gaps, which allow water to recirculate inside the pump instead of being pushed toward the engine cooling system. This process, known as cavitation or internal slippage, drastically reduces the volume and pressure of water delivered to the engine. Replacing them as a set ensures that both surfaces are perfectly flat and parallel, maintaining a tight hydraulic seal that forces water to flow outward at maximum efficiency.
