Shear stability refers to an engine oil&#x27;s ability to maintain its intended thickness, or viscosity, when subjected to the intense mechanical forces found inside a four-stroke outboard engine. Motor oil is made of base oil mixed with long-chain molecules called viscosity index improvers, which allow the oil to flow easily when cold while remaining thick enough to protect parts when hot. Inside an engine, oil is frequently squeezed between fast-moving metal components, such as the gears in the transmission or the gap between the piston rings and cylinder walls. This process is called shearing. If an oil has low shear stability, these long-chain molecules are physically chopped or torn apart by the mechanical pressure, causing the oil to permanently lose its viscosity and become thinner. In a four-stroke outboard, which often shares oil between the engine and the gearbox, this shearing effect is extreme. If the oil thins out, it can no longer maintain a protective film between moving parts, leading to metal-to-metal contact, increased friction, rapid wear, and eventual engine failure. Therefore, high shear stability is critical because it ensures the oil retains its designed viscosity and protective properties throughout its entire service life, preventing mechanical degradation despite the harsh operating environment of the outboard motor.
