A successful conversion is confirmed when the meter displays a steady DC voltage reading, typically between 13.5 and 14.5 volts, which indicates the system is charging the battery. Alternating current, or AC, is electricity that periodically reverses direction, while direct current, or DC, flows in only one direction, which is the only type of electricity a battery can store. The stator produces AC as the engine rotates, and the rectifier component inside the regulator/rectifier acts as a one-way valve to convert this AC into the DC required by the battery. If the multimeter shows zero or negative voltage, or if the reading remains at the static battery voltage of roughly 12.6 volts without increasing, the rectifier has failed to convert the AC output into usable DC.
