Why is it important to consider traffic volume when selecting a pavement maintenance treatment?

It is important to consider traffic volume when selecting a pavement maintenance treatment because traffic loading significantly influences the rate of pavement deterioration and the effectiveness of different treatments. High-traffic pavements experience greater stress and strain than low-traffic pavements, leading to faster development of distresses such as rutting, cracking, and potholes. A treatment that is effective on a low-traffic pavement may not be adequate for a high-traffic pavement. For example, a thin overlay may be sufficient for a low-traffic road with minor surface distresses, but a thicker overlay or full-depth reconstruction may be necessary for a high-traffic highway with significant structural damage. The type of traffic is also an important consideration. Heavy trucks impose much greater loads on pavements than passenger cars, so pavements with a high percentage of truck traffic require more robust maintenance treatments. The expected service life of the treatment should also be considered in relation to the traffic volume. A treatment with a short service life may be appropriate for a low-traffic pavement, but a longer-lasting treatment may be needed for a high-traffic pavement to minimize disruption and life-cycle costs. Therefore, considering traffic volume is essential for selecting a pavement maintenance treatment that will provide adequate performance and minimize life-cycle costs.
