The Archie equation calculates water saturation based on the assumption that the only electrical conductor in the reservoir rock is the formation water within the pores. In a clean sand, electricity flows solely through this water. However, clay minerals possess a physical property called Cation Exchange Capacity, which is the ability of the clay surface to attract and hold positively charged ions from the surrounding fluid. These adsorbed ions are mobile and create an additional pathway for electrical current to flow along the surfaces of the clay minerals. This process is known as surface conduction. When the Archie equation is used without accounting for this extra clay-induced conductivity, the total measured conductivity of the rock appears higher than it would be if only the pore water were conducting. Because the Archie equation assumes this higher conductivity is caused entirely by a larger volume of water, it interprets the data as if the pores contain more water than they actually do. Consequently, to balance the equation, the calculation overestimates the water volume, which mathematically forces an underestimation of the oil or gas volume, represented as the remaining hydrocarbon saturation.
