When the reservoir pressure drops below the dew point—the specific pressure at which the first tiny droplet of liquid begins to form from a gas—the phenomenon of retrograde condensation occurs. Unlike typical substances where decreasing pressure turns liquids into gases, retrograde condensation causes the heaviest hydrocarbon components within the gas mixture to condense into a liquid phase inside the porous rock of the reservoir. As pressure continues to fall, the volume of this liquid phase increases. Because this liquid is trapped within the microscopic pores of the rock, it becomes immobile and cannot be recovered by the producing well. This process, known as condensate banking, results in the loss of valuable liquid components and creates a barrier of liquid around the wellbore that restricts the flow of the remaining gas, significantly reducing the productivity of the reservoir.
