What is a hand in poker, and how is it ranked?



In poker, a hand refers to the set of cards held by a player. The rank of a hand determines its value, which determines the winner of the game. The following is a list of poker hands ranked from highest to lowest:

1. Royal Flush: This is the best hand in poker and consists of a straight flush with the Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Ten of the same suit.
2. Straight Flush: This is a combination of five cards of the same suit in numerical order. For example, a Straight Flush could be made up of the 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of hearts.
3. Four of a Kind: This hand consists of four cards of the same rank, such as four Aces or four Kings.
4. Full House: A Full House is made up of three cards of the same rank, and two cards of another rank. For example, three Jacks and two Kings.
5. Flush: A Flush is a hand where all five cards are of the same suit, but not in numerical order. For example, a hand with the 2, 5, 7, 9, and Queen of spades.
6. Straight: A Straight is a hand with five cards in numerical order, but not necessarily of the same suit. For example, the 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 of different suits.
7. Three of a Kind: This hand consists of three cards of the same rank, such as three Queens or three 10s.
8. Two Pair: A hand with two pairs of cards of the same rank. For example, two 7s and two Jacks.
9. One Pair: A hand with two cards of the same rank, such as two Aces or two Kings.
10. High Card: When a hand does not have any of the above combinations, the highest card in the hand determines its value. If two players have hands with the same high card, the next highest card in the hand is compared until a winner is determined.

Understanding the rank of a hand is crucial to playing and winning at poker. Players must be able to quickly assess the value of their hand and make decisions accordingly. It is also important to note that the ranking of hands can vary slightly depending on the type of poker being played, so players should be familiar with the rules of the specific game they are playing.
