To fix these errors, we must identify them without measuring the actual data qubits, because a direct measurement would destroy the superposition that holds the quantum information. Ancillary qubits act as intermediaries. We position them between data qubits and perform specific multi-qubit logic gates called parity checks. These parity checks compare the states of neighboring data qubits by mapping their relationship onto the ancillary qubit. After the gate operation, we measure only the ancillary qubit. If the result is zero, no error is detected. If the result is one, it signals an error in the surrounding data qubits, known as a syndrome. By tracking these syndromes across the entire grid over time, we can determine the exact location and type of error that occurred. Once identified, the classical computer applies a corrective operation to the data qubits to restore the original state.
