This leakage causes the qubit to lose information and degrades gate fidelity. To prevent this, the DRAG method modifies the pulse shape by adding a secondary component that is proportional to the derivative of the primary Gaussian pulse and applying it to the quadrature channel of the microwave drive. This derivative component creates destructive interference at the specific frequency of the unwanted transition. By canceling out the spectral power that would otherwise excite the higher state, the DRAG pulse ensures that the qubit remains restricted to the intended two-level system while allowing for much faster gate operations.
