In the Critical Path Method, float, also known as slack, is the amount of time that a project activity can be delayed from its early start date without delaying the project finish date. The critical path is the sequence of tasks that determines the shortest possible duration of a project; any delay to a task on this path directly delays the entire project. Therefore, tasks on the critical path have zero float. Activities not on the critical path have positive float because they have more time available than they actually need to be completed. There are two primary types of float. Free float is the amount of time an activity can be delayed without delaying the early start date of its immediate successor task. Total float is the total amount of time an activity can be delayed without delaying the final completion date of the entire project. For example, if a task is scheduled to take five days but can finish as late as ten days from now without pushing back the project deadline, that task has five days of total float. This flexibility allows project managers to reallocate resources from non-critical tasks to critical ones if necessary.
