In Stoicism, why should you manage personal emotions during a conflict?

In Stoicism, you should manage personal emotions during a conflict because emotions, particularly negative ones like anger, fear, and resentment, cloud judgment and hinder rational decision-making. Stoics believe that virtue, which is the sole good, is achieved through reason and self-control. Emotions, when left unchecked, can lead to impulsive actions and irrational behavior that are contrary to virtue. Managing emotions during conflict allows one to maintain clarity of thought, assess the situation objectively, and respond in a way that is consistent with Stoic principles of wisdom, justice, courage, and temperance. By controlling emotions, you remain focused on what is within your control (your thoughts and actions) and avoid being swayed by external circumstances or the behavior of others. This promotes constructive dialogue, problem-solving, and the preservation of inner peace, even in the midst of disagreement. For example, instead of reacting angrily to a perceived injustice, a Stoic practitioner would pause, assess the situation rationally, and respond calmly and thoughtfully, seeking a fair and just resolution without succumbing to emotional reactivity.
