βThe TBMs are like a worm. In the front they have the cutterhead which have the teath that rotates and eats it way thought the geology. From behind the TBM pusses itself using pistons from the lining. The material drops in from the screwconveyor back to the belt or pipes if slurry tbm. A lot of diferent tbms exist depends the progect. we use them because they are faster than traditional methods and safer for the people working in them. The make les vibrations very iportant when we are doing metro works under houses usually we use epb then. the segments for the rings enter in the machine with specialized vehicles msv or locomotives. around the tunnel linning and the geology we use grout in order to fill the voids and make the tunnel steady. tbms can be electric or hydraulic drive.Their significance is that we can make longer bigger faster tunnels and also make imposible otherwise tunnels like under the sea where we use slurry tbms.β
