Intersectionality is a concept that describes how different aspects of a person's identity, such as race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and ability, intersect and interact to create unique experiences of privilege and oppression. The term was first coined by Black feminist scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, who argued that traditional feminist and anti-racism movements were failing to account for the experiences of Black women who faced both gender and racial discrimination.
