What is a common cause of distorted images in rearview mirrors?

A common cause of distorted images in rearview mirrors is delamination of the reflective coating or damage to the mirror surface. Rearview mirrors typically consist of a glass substrate with a reflective coating applied to the back surface. Over time, this coating can separate from the glass due to exposure to heat, humidity, or UV radiation, causing delamination. Delamination results in a blurry or distorted image, making it difficult to accurately judge distances and identify objects in the mirror. Physical damage to the mirror surface, such as scratches, cracks, or pitting, can also cause distortion. These imperfections interfere with the reflection of light, creating an uneven or unclear image. A distorted rearview mirror reduces the driver's ability to see clearly, increasing the risk of accidents.
