What is the function of the hydraulic accumulator in an anti-lock braking system?

The function of the hydraulic accumulator in an anti-lock braking system (ABS) is to store hydraulic fluid under pressure, providing a readily available source of fluid for the ABS modulator unit to rapidly increase brake pressure during ABS activation. During an ABS event, the system needs to quickly apply and release brake pressure to prevent wheel lockup. The hydraulic accumulator stores high-pressure fluid, allowing the ABS modulator to rapidly increase pressure to the brake calipers as needed. This ensures a fast and responsive ABS action. The accumulator is typically charged by an electric pump. The stored pressure is used to supplement the pressure from the master cylinder, enabling the ABS to function independently of the driver's foot pressure on the brake pedal. This is particularly important when the driver is applying maximum braking force, and the ABS needs to cycle the brakes quickly.
