The drill string transmits rotational torque and weight to the drill bit while also serving as a conduit for drilling fluid circulation downhole, making it essential for both mechanical drilling and hydraulics. The drill bit is the primary cutting element that crushes and shears rock formations, directly determining the rate of penetration and overall drilling efficiency depending on bit type and formation hardness. The rotating system, including top drive or rotary table, converts surface power into rotational motion of the drill string, enabling continuous cutting action at the bit.
