Question

When monitoring your surroundings, what is the specific indicator that a vehicle is likely following you rather than just sharing the road?

Accepted Answer

The most reliable sign that a car is following you is the repetition of your own choices. If you change lanes or make a turn, and that car does the exact same thing behind you shortly after, it is likely following you. This is called pattern matching. Think of it like a game of follow-the-leader; if someone mimics your route three or four times in a row, it is almost never a coincidence. A normal driver just wants to get to their own destination, so they will keep going straight while you turn off. To be sure, you can perform a test by making three turns in the same direction, such as three right turns in a row. If the other car makes all three of those same turns, they are staying with you on purpose.
