Every time your device sends a bit of sensor data with HTTP, it must start a new connection, which involves a lengthy back-and-forth conversation with the server just to say hello. This takes a lot of time and forces the device&#x27;s radio to stay on, which drains the battery very quickly. MQTT is different because it uses a persistent connection, which is like keeping a phone line open so you can just speak whenever you need to without redialing. Because the connection is already open, the device sends the data instantly and goes back to sleep right away. MQTT also uses a very tiny &#x27;header,&#x27; which is like the address label on an envelope. HTTP uses a huge, bulky label filled with extra information that the sensor doesn&#x27;t really need. Sending less data means the radio works for a shorter time, and keeping the radio off is the best way to save battery.
