Course Overview
Building Systems That Talk To Each Other
How computers work as a group
- You will learn how to make many separate computers act like one big computer. This is called a distributed system.
- You will learn about consistency. This means making sure that if one computer changes a piece of data, all the other computers know about that change at the same time.
- You will learn about availability. This means making sure the system keeps working even if one of the computers breaks or loses power.
- You will learn how to handle partitions. This is what happens when computers get cut off from each other and cannot talk for a little while. You will learn how to pick which computer stays in charge during these times.
Sending messages between systems
- You will learn about message queues. Think of this like a digital waiting line where one computer drops off a task and another computer picks it up later, so they do not have to wait for each other.
- You will learn about publish-subscribe models. This is where one computer sends out a broadcast, and only the other computers that signed up to hear that specific news will receive it.
- You will learn how to handle failures. If a message gets lost in the middle of being sent, you will learn how to detect the loss and send it again automatically.
The World of Smart Objects and Sensors
Connecting the physical world to the internet
- You will learn how small sensors, like a thermometer or a camera, send their information to a larger central computer.
- You will learn about protocols. These are the rulebooks that tell devices how to talk to each other. You will master rules like MQTT, which is designed to send tiny bits of data using very little battery power.
- You will learn about gateways. A gateway is a bridge that connects small, simple sensors to the larger, complicated internet.
Processing data close to the source
- You will learn about edge computing. This means doing the math and making decisions right on the sensor or the device, instead of sending everything to a distant data center.
- You will learn why this is important. It saves time because the data does not have to travel far. It also helps the system work even if the internet connection is broken.
Making Systems Strong and Secure
Storing data across many places
- You will learn how to spread data out across many computers. This way, if one hard drive fails, the information is safe on a different computer.
- You will learn about replication. This is the process of making copies of your data so you always have a backup if the original gets destroyed.
Protecting the network
- You will learn how to encrypt data. This means turning information into a secret code so that even if a hacker steals it, they cannot read it.
- You will learn about authentication. This is the process of checking that a device or a person is really who they say they are before letting them connect to your system.
- You will learn how to spot unusual behavior. If a sensor suddenly starts acting strange or sending weird data, you will learn how to automatically block that device to protect the rest of the group.
