The main reason for edge computing is to beat the speed limit of light. When data has to travel all the way to a distant cloud data center, it takes time to get there and time to get an answer back. This delay is called latency. For things that need to happen instantly, like a self-driving car hitting the brakes, waiting for that trip to the cloud is too slow and dangerous. Edge computing processes data right where it is created, like inside the car itself, so the computer can act immediately. Think of it like deciding to jump out of the way of a ball; it is much faster to move your own legs than to call your brain in another city to ask if you should dodge it.
