Course Overview

Core Principles of Information Security

The CIA Triad and Beyond

  • Confidentiality: Implementing access controls and encryption standards to ensure that sensitive information is accessible only to authorized entities.
  • Integrity: Utilizing hashing algorithms and digital signatures to verify that data has not been altered or tampered with during transit or storage.
  • Availability: Designing resilient infrastructure and redundant systems to ensure that services remain operational and accessible during unexpected failures or deliberate attacks.
  • Non-repudiation: Establishing rigorous audit trails and logging mechanisms to verify the origin and authenticity of actions, preventing users from denying their activities.

Network Security Architecture

Defense-in-Depth Strategies

  • Segmentation: Dividing a physical network into smaller, isolated logical segments to restrict lateral movement of unauthorized actors.
  • Perimeter Defense: Deploying firewalls with deep packet inspection and intrusion detection systems (IDS) to monitor, filter, and block malicious traffic patterns.
  • Zero Trust Architecture: Implementing the principle of least privilege where no user or device is trusted by default, regardless of their location within the network perimeter.

Cryptography and Data Protection

Symmetric and Asymmetric Encryption

  • Symmetric Encryption: Applying algorithms such as AES-256 for high-speed data at rest, focusing on secure key management strategies.
  • Asymmetric Encryption: Utilizing RSA and Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) for secure key exchange, digital identity verification, and establishing trust through Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
  • Hashing Functions: Employing SHA-256 and SHA-3 to create unique fingerprints of data for integrity verification and secure password storage using salt and pepper techniques.

Threat Identification and Vulnerability Management

Proactive Security Analysis

  • Vulnerability Assessment: Performing systematic scans to identify weaknesses in systems, such as unpatched software, misconfigured services, or outdated firmware.
  • Threat Modeling: Analyzing the potential attack surface of an application or infrastructure to predict possible entry points and prioritize mitigation efforts.
  • Risk Assessment Methodologies: Evaluating the impact and likelihood of potential threats to business assets to inform strategic resource allocation and mitigation plans.

Access Control and Identity Management

Authentication and Authorization Frameworks

  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Designing authentication schemes that require at least two independent categories of credentials, such as something you know, something you have, and something you are.
  • Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): Assigning system permissions based on user roles within an organization to ensure that users access only the data necessary for their specific job functions.
  • Identity Lifecycle Management: Managing the creation, maintenance, and timely decommissioning of user identities to prevent orphaned accounts and unauthorized entry.

Security Operations and Incident Response

Monitoring and Mitigation

  • Log Management: Centralizing logs from servers, firewalls, and applications into a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) system for real-time analysis.
  • Incident Response Life Cycle: Following structured protocols for detection, containment, eradication, and recovery following a security breach to minimize operational downtime.
  • Forensic Readiness: Maintaining systems in a state where evidence of malicious activity can be collected, preserved, and analyzed for legal or investigative purposes.
