Data precision refers to the level of detail captured; higher precision involves more frequent data points, while lower precision involves fewer points covering larger time spans. When you downsample, you discard the original high-resolution raw data points in favor of a summary, such as an average, maximum, or minimum value for that interval. This reduces the total number of records stored in the database. Historical query performance improves significantly because the database has fewer data points to read from disk and process when generating a report or graph for long time ranges. For example, if you store temperature readings every second, a query covering one year requires processing over thirty million points, which is computationally expensive. If you downsample that data to one-minute averages, the same year-long query only requires processing about five hundred thousand points, allowing the database to return results much faster. The trade-off is that you lose the granular detail of the original data, meaning you can no longer inspect individual second-by-second fluctuations once the raw data is discarded or moved to archival storage.
