Instead, their body stays upright in the water like they are standing on a ladder. They do not kick their legs because they are busy trying to push down on the water to lift their mouth above the surface to breathe. Their head is usually tilted back with their mouth wide open. Their hair might be in their eyes because they cannot move their hands to push it away. They are also very quiet because the brain prioritizes breathing over talking. This is like a person who is so focused on trying to breathe that they have no energy left for anything else. In contrast, someone who is just playing or swimming will move their arms and legs to stay afloat or move forward. They can talk, shout, and change their position. If someone is splashing, calling for help, or playing, they are usually safe. If they are vertical, silent, and staring at the water with their head tilted back, they are likely drowning.
